Although a number of clinical trials, naturalistic studies and meta-analyses, as well as the experience of many clinicians, have suggested that personality disorders exert a negative effect on the treatment outcome of major depressive disorder, there are conflicting results in the literature probably owing to methodological limitations, including small sample sizes, lack of standardized diagnostic interviews and retrospective or crosssectional designs.
